Fitting a dress

Mexico, December 2006. Our clothes look a bit worn out from the last years travel, which makes our friends Patricia and Jorge from Chicxulub think we could need something new. They search their wardrobe, and soon hand out a new t-shirt to Augustas and a nice long dress to me. My dress’ color is pastel green. It’s beautiful, though I realize quite soon that it makes me look pretty pale. In general I tend to wear rather strong colored clothes with my favorites being red, orange, yellow, sky blue, violet etc. Anyway, I am grateful receiving it, who knows what’s...

Pillow instead Plastic Smog

Varkala, India, 2009/10. Upon entering into our own house in India, the house owner points to our question “Where to recycle plastic trash?” to a pile of waste burning in the neighbor’s garden. I am terrified by the thought of polluting the air with burning plastics, and decide that for the whole 6 months that I will stay in this house I am not going to burn any one piece of it. Instead I get the idea of recycling it in a creative way. I decide to make a pillow, one for sitting comfortable on the ground. During the half year in Varkala my husband is washing...

Chardonnay in a Basket

Denmark, Spring 2009. Walking through a tunnel on my way home from the central bus station in Aalborg, I discover a demolished basket positioned artfully just a meter before the exit. The sun rays illumine the exit of the tunnel, and make the basket appear in a good mood – though the obvious destruction experienced. On close-up I discover a shiny bottle of Chardonnay in the basket. A French white wine in a demolished bicycle basket in an underground tunnel in Aalborg. How does this go together? Let’s imagine. A couple in love rides home from a dinner of smoked...

Exposed Mind

What would a psychoanalyst likely be interpreting when getting this drawing into his hands? Under which category would I fall? Whichever it is, it is rather a presumption. And in order to prevent any of those, here my truth 😉 It is December 2002. Christmas is approaching, and my mind is loaded with activities waiting ahead and laying behind. There is this photography book of my friend Michael, which mirrors African tribal life. One close-up photograph catches my focus. Fascinated by his delightful appearance, I pull out my magic pencil and let it fly over the sheet of paper....

Just draw this first line

It’s so true when it’s about drawing. As long as you keep your pencil away from the paper, you might wait enternally for creative ideas. I find the best for me is when I just stop thinking whenever I feel the urge to draw something. I take a paper, a pencil, turn on some wonderful music matching my mood, and then let my hands do whatever they want. In this case it is a mere, though remarkable line. I just make one big wave with my arm, and there it is: A FACE. Wow! Everything around just develops all by itself. The cheek is amazing. I love to realize that everything...

Denmark’s fascinating Spring awakening

Aalborg, Denmark, March 2009. The first sun rays are reaching out their arms, embracing Aalborg’s streets with the mild love of Spring. Delighted, I step out in front of the door, ignoring the cold shiver when the icy wind creeps into my face and extremities. Goose bumps back and forth, this sunshine means to me the end of Denmark’s winter time. My heart and soul burst out in joy, and all I desire right now is venturing into the nearby sculpture park. The park greets me with the first signs of Spring awakening. Tiny little flowers are breaking through the ground,...

Trimaran’s name-day

Isla de Mujeres, Mexico, December 2006. I am working and living with my husband on an orange trimaran (boat with three parallel hulls), which is standing on land receiving some major repair. Besides doing true major stuff like resealing the windows, repainting the boat, and repairing broken parts, there is one task requiring a bit of creative thinking. Stuart, the boat’s captain, has got a beautiful name for his trimaran – Aransas. AND – he leaves it to me to get an idea of designing and fixing the name on the outside hull of the boat 😉 I’ve got another...

The Symphony of Your Soul

A special birthday present For long I have the strong inner wish to give my mom something special for her upcoming birthday; something out of the ordinary. Often I see the image of a waving, black and white piano keyboard in my mind. The background is totally black, while the keys are popping out white with occasional black stripes. I decide to paint it, somehow. Just how? I remembered that I had made a photo of my mom playing the piano, but I cannot find it anywhere (now while composing this article it magically pops up ;). Well, I still have time to figure that out. One day...

Fertile boots in Berlin

It is one of these fairy-tale Berlin afternoons, which smell like new discoveries. I pass by a place, which I consider remarkably beautiful. It is called AUSLAND (Foreign lands). Formerly abandoned, it was resurrected by alternative people eager to live in a community. They bought it, renovated the house from scratch, and decorate this beauty regularly anew with interesting art installations. This time I am pretty surprised. An arrangement of antique moss-covered boots strung together in one line, out of which sprout happy green grass leaves. Right in front of the boots a bench...

A magic dog tale

A couple of days ago we leave our housing on Ko Phangan island in Thailand at four o’clock in the morning. We need to catch the ferry at 5 a.m. to the mainland for our Visa run to the Malaysian border. Being the only pedestrians walking the dark and quiet streets, frequently dogs announce our presence with alarming voices. “Hey neighbors (dogs), watch out! There is some creepy guys coming along…” We are neither creepy, nor guys. Only one of us fits this category, actually. As we move on we pass a famous ‘BE AWARE DOG’ spot. All of a sudden...
