Christmas is what you make of it

Christmas 2006, Isla de Mujeres, Mexico. For the first time during Christmas we are both far away from home. It’s summerish warm outside, and the only things reminding Christmas are plastic decorations and an artificial Christmas tree in town. December 24, 2006. We are alone on the boat. It’s late in the evening, and we just finished working. The usual Christmas spirit of this day is totally absent. We remain silent, each one of us deep in thoughts. We think of our families, remembering the beautiful Christmas traditions, the Christmas dinner, the handing out of...

A tigress proper bath

In Berlin’s backyards one can find the weirdest things, especially in those created as a space for everybody to visit in an unofficial squat. People living here care for their fellow human beings, for any creature actually, and for anything existing here on earth. They value things that others discard thoughtless in a container, or throw it out their window, letting it rot on the street until a local cleaning service removes the items from sidewalks and streets, or even parks. The inhabitants in this squat are extraordinarily creative. The backyard is green, like a huge...

Fertile boots in Berlin

It is one of these fairy-tale Berlin afternoons, which smell like new discoveries. I pass by a place, which I consider remarkably beautiful. It is called AUSLAND (Foreign lands). Formerly abandoned, it was resurrected by alternative people eager to live in a community. They bought it, renovated the house from scratch, and decorate this beauty regularly anew with interesting art installations. This time I am pretty surprised. An arrangement of antique moss-covered boots strung together in one line, out of which sprout happy green grass leaves. Right in front of the boots a bench...

Creativity

Everyone is creative. Each and everyone has the gift to create something, no matter what it is. Being creative is a brand which is put, in my opinion, too often only on those that bring out famous paintings, sculptures, symphonies, magnificent dances, a million-dollar sold novel etc. That is neither fair, nor true. Everyone is creative, and I claim so because no matter how it looks what each and everyone of us creates each and every day of his life, even though other people disagree simply because their perception of beauty or their taste is different to yours, it is and will...

Drawing on the right side of the brain

Just to let you know, being “skilled” in drawing is something anyone can learn, if he desires to. The most important thing in drawing something that looks authentic, is to be able to SEE. The book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards makes that very clear. Only if you are able to really SEE things as they are, you will be able to draw things as they appear. If YOU always dreamed of drawing authentic, then take my advice and get this book. It is fantastic, especially for those that have always believed they cannot draw. I have read...

Everyone can draw

If you think you cannot draw in the moment you are drawing something you most likely will not appreciate the outcome. The true point here is, you will not like it NOT because YOU BELIEVE it is bad, but because you JUDGE yourself according to standards out there. Maye somebody has once criticized your art. You might as well unconsciously refer to a situation, which has hurt you, which left marks in your memory. I have learned over the years that everyone who is able to write can draw, because writing is a DRAWING! If you look at different handwritings, you cannot find anyone...

High-heels – a painful ridicule

Isn’t it ridiculous that women are still wearing high-heels? No? I say, Yes. Women and men alike know the power of high heels, which in first place is just about “attraction”. I agree that they make women’s legs appear longer. I agree that they look beautiful with a costume or lady-like dress. I agree that they are drawing men’s eyes on women – which, if we are honest, is what we women want. We love to be attractive. Now, this is all beautiful, just what about the pain we are actually putting up with while wearing them? High-heels are usually...

That much I loved tea with cookies in Spain

It feels like it is yesterday, and I am sitting on the round table in the living room of my Spanish living community. We are three girls sharing a 4-room house, and we all love to spend the first half or more hour of our days on that table, provided with a hot chocolate, tea or cappucchino and delicious cookies. Counting backwards I realize that this “yesterday” is already 7 years old, and it’s still so alive in my memory. My precious time in Zaragoza, Spain… My love for tea brought me to collect all kinds of tea packages, for unknown creative reasons....
